5/29/2023 0 Comments Book we need to talk about kevinShe wakes up every morning to red paint on her ramshackle house and beat-up car, and when she's not being verbally and physically abused, is the focus of both harsh and troubled looks. Ramsay's approach sees Tilda Swinton in her most approachable, empathetic role yet as Eva, a woman ostracised in her community. The novel is actually a series of letters from a woman to her estranged husband, regarding motherhood, which ends with a killer sting. While I have not read the book, it's worth pointing out to those that have that the structure has been drastically altered. Together with her husband and co-writer Rory Kinnear, she confidently adapts Lionel Shriver's best-selling novel of the same name. Scottish director Lynne Ramsay (Movern Cellar, Ratcatcher) returns with a beautifully crafted but deeply upsetting drama that is hugely ambitious and utterly magnificent. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Ninth House by Leigh BardugoWhen her friend sent her pictures from their time at Yale years later, Bardugo was struck with memories, both pleasant and unpleasant, which inspired her to explore trauma for this novel but also companionship through it. Bardugo first became inspired upon discovering the tombs of Yale's secret societies as she walked down New Haven's Grove Street during her freshman year. The novel is Bardugo's first adult novel and, beyond the fantasy elements, is largely inspired by her time at Yale University. She attempts to navigate her new life at the Ivy League while tasked by her benefactor with monitoring the eight Houses of the Veil, secret societies that harbor dark occult magic and power, as a member of Lethe, the ninth house. Alex is mysteriously offered a full ride to university following her trauma despite her background and lack of qualifications. The novel follows unlikely Yale University freshman 20-year-old Galaxy "Alex" Stern, a high school drop out and homicide survivor who can see ghosts, called "Grays". The first in a series, Ninth House was followed by a sequel titled Hell Bent, which was published in January 2023. Ninth House is a paranormal fantasy novel by American author Leigh Bardugo, published by Flatiron Books in October 2019. 5/29/2023 0 Comments X-Men by Roy ThomasTheir iconic run introduced the cosmic-powered Havok, the vampiric villain Sauron and the bizarre Mutates, while pairing the X-Men and Ka-Zar in a classic Savage Land battle against the X-Men's greatest foe - Magneto! Urgent and vital, feeld composes a new and highly inventive lyrical narrative of what it means to live inside a marked body. "gendre is not the tran organe / gendre is yes a hemorage." "did u kno not a monthe goes bye / a tran i kno doesnt dye." The world of feeld is our own, but off-kilter, distinctly queer-making visible what was formerly and forcefully hidden: trauma, liberation, strength, and joy. In Charles's electrifying transliteration of English-Chaucerian in affect, but revolutionary in effect-what is old is made new again. "i care so much abot the whord i cant reed." In feeld, Charles stakes her claim on the language available to speak about trans experience, reckoning with the narratives that have come before by reclaiming the language of the past.
